Louisiana Tech may have just begun its Fall Camp but had an unofficial visitor on campus yesterday in the way of Woodlawn High School (Baton Rouge) kicker Jonathan Barnes.
Tech will lose its kicking specialist following the season in Matt Nelson. Tech hosted Barnes twice in the last month -- once at its kicking camp and again yesterday for an unofficial visit with his family.
During the visit, Barnes and his family toured the Tech facilities, met with academic advisors, talked to some of the players and also talked with the coaches.
"We came up [to Ruston] yesterday around 12 and met with Coach Tommerdaul," Barnes said. "[Tech] had a schedule for us for the unofficial visit of what we were going to do for the day, and got to meet all the coaches, see all the facilities, talk with the academic councilor, and I got to talk with some of the players a little bit which was good because I kind of got their insight on everything. Then we stayed and watched a little practice which was fun."
After Tech offered, Barnes said his parents wanted to visit Ruston before he made a commitment. Barnes said his parents liked what they saw as well and during his ride home he called Tommerdahl and committed to Tech.
"I got there, and after seeing everything I knew that it was pretty much where I wanted to go. I was going to call Coach Tommerdaul after practice anyway but on the ride home I decided that Tech was the place I wanted to go to college."
Barnes says he has not heard from anyone recently as far as recruiting other than Tech.
Tech stressed the "Tech Family" to any student who visits Tech. Barnes seemed to really catch on to that during his visit.
"My favorite part was the family atmosphere, I really liked how close-knit everyone was. It was just a great great environment to be around everyone."
Barnes plans to be pre-med student at Tech and reports a 26 on the ACT and a 4.4 GPA.
