Louisiana Tech defensive line coach Stan Eggen could be one of the few staff members remaining at Tech from the Sonny Dykes era to the Skip Holtz era. Eggen's ability to recruit defensive lineman and recruit period likely convinced Holtz to retain him.
Eggen's loyalty to a talented Shreveport-Bossier area player paid off in the signing of Kilgore College defensive tackle DeAngelo Brooks. Brooks played his high school football at Bossier City's Airline High School and was also a two-time state champion wrestler at the 285-pound weight class.
Brooks had to sit out his senior season at Airline and even through all of that Tech's Eggen stuck with Brooks and believed in him.
"[Eggen] stuck with me through the whole situation of me having to sit out my senior year in high school and me going JUCO," Brooks said. "After all that he still wanted to get me to Louisiana Tech and coach me. He was very loyal and I respected that."
The relationship Brooks had with Eggen was definitely the driving force behind Brooks becoming a Bulldog.
"I've been knowing Coach Eggen since my Junior year in high school and to this day he still wants to coach me. He didn't give up on me after everything that happened. Even with the head coach change I still believed in Coach Eggen as he believed in me."
Being near his friends and family is big for Brooks as well.
"It means the world to me [to play close to home]. There's nothing like playing in front of family and friends. The environment will be good to play in again."
Last weekend, Brooks took his official visit to Tech and had the chance to sit down with Holtz.
"I had a chance to sit down with him [Holtz] on my recruiting trip and he's a good guy. He's going to try to keep building LA Tech's football program and he cares a lot about his players. He's going to make sure Louisiana Tech is going to be on of the dominant programs in the nation."
According to Rivals.com's JCGridiron.com, Brooks was one of the top defensive tackles in the 2013 junior college class.
