The Louisiana Tech basketball team is off to a 2-0 start in the WAC and an overall record of 11-3. On New Year's Eve, the Dunkin' Dawgs were able to take down its nemesis from a year ago in the New Mexico State Aggies who beat them three times last year.
Previously this season, Tech has forced turnovers with its relentless pressure in its victories. Against the Aggies, Tech's offense won the game for the Bulldogs.
Freshman guard Alex Hamilton propelled Tech to victory with a career-high 20 points and 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Hamilton has forced head coach Mike White to give him more playing time.
"[Hamilton] has kept an edge about him in terms of a competitive spirit daily in practice with a chip on his shoulder," White said. "Fighting for minutes and an opportunity, [and] forcing me to put him in the game really overall."
Tech's two victories come over two teams picked ahead of them in the preseason polls in New Mexico State and Denver. New Mexico State was picked to finish first by the coaches ans second by the media while Denver was picked to finish third by both. Tech was picked to finish fourth.
Tech goes on the road Saturday to try and improve to 3-0 as they travel to Arlington, Texas to take on the UT Arlington Mavericks. The Mavericks sit at 1-1 in WAC play with a victory over New Mexico State and a loss to Denver.
UT Arlington runs much of its offense through 6-10 forward Jordan Reves. Reeves is averaging just under 10 points a game so far this season.
