After the spring, Louisiana Tech released its post-spring depth chart. One position with the most concerning depth is linebacker.
Listed as the starters following spring football at middle linebacker and outside linebacker are Junior College transfers Nick Thomason and Mitch Villemez, respectively. Although Thomason and Villemez were recruited to play right away, the fact that two newcomers are listed as the starters show the need at the position.
Former safety Mike Schrang was moved to outside linebacker last fall and now finds himself as the no. 2 middle linebacker behind Thomason. At 6-foot-1 210 pounds, Schrang is a bit undersized for the position but has a great nose for the football.
Redshirt Sophomore, Beau Fitte, is listed as the no. 2 outside linebacker. With four linebackers accounted for, only four other linebackers are listed on the roster -- Andre Wiggins, Ches Morrison, Ty Hook and 2013 signee Tony Johnson.
We broke Friday night that former Texas Tech linebacker Daniel Cobb was transferring to La. Tech. During the 2011-2012 season, Cobb was the third leading tackler for the Red Raiders with 70 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hurries and 1 forced fumble.
Cobb has graduated from Texas Tech and is eligible to play immediately. Louisiana Tech had a slew of seniors on last years team and also did not sign its full 25 scholarships in February leaving the Bulldogs with a scholarship for Cobb.
Cobb will bolster Tech's depth at linebacker and has the ability to push for playing time at the position. Another player with the ability to push for playing time is Wake Forest transfer Andre Wiggins who sat out last season because of NCAA transfer rules.
Cobb could not be reached for comment on this story.
